Physical Development

Section Summary

Physical Development

Physical Development is a child’s collective ability to move around using different body parts, employing the muscle groups, gross and fine, and the five senses. Gross Motor Skills move the entire body, enabling actions like rolling over, crawling, walking, and jumping. Fine Motor Skills, including Visual Motor Skills and Graphomotor Skills, use small muscle movements to manipulate small objects.

Subsections Summary

Balance

A Sense of Balance is the result of our inner ear, our eyes, and our bones and joints working together to maintain our body's balance . Children who are visually or auditorially impaired are especially affected by a disruption in this cycle. Activities rich in movement and building gross motor coordination, such as sitting, kneeling, standing, squatting, walking, and stepping are important in the development of balance.Walking on balance beams and rocking movement toys improve balance.

Body Awareness

Body Awareness is a sense of where our bodies are in relation to our environment and where various parts of our bodies are in relation to one another. The brain uses all our senses, kinesthetic and proprioceptive sites, to provide its sense of body-in-space.. Mirrors and toys, such as the Creativity Collage, help a child improve body awareness. Play should promote motor coordination, building muscle tone, and fine motor skills development as well.

Fine Motor

Fine Motor Skills development involves manipulative activities which strengthen the small muscle groups. Handling objects during play, such as dexterity boards, cubes, mazes, play sets, puzzles, and simple construction projects, encourage eye movement and build fine motor skills by exercising fingers and hands.

Gross Motor

A child's gross motor skills involve the large muscles of the body, arms, legs, feet, or the entire body that enable such functions as sitting upright, lifting, and throwing a ball.. These skills depend on both muscle tone and strength. Age appropriate climbing, stepping, throwing, twisting, turning, and bending activities develop gross motor skills. Building blocks, construction toys, pull along toys, and fun toys that encourage bending, crawling, lifting, and walking are beneficial.

Positioning

Positioning describes the posture or position of the body that best enables a child to achieve every day activities. Some children need positioning equipment to maintain their balance and allow them to use their energy for play and movement. Physical support products assure proper positioning for a child during various activities and will be different for each child's needs.
